Son of Johannes Forler, a tailor, and Katharina Lienhard, John married Catharine Krieger on March 23, 1824 in Bischholtz, Alsace, France. Their first 3 daughters were born there between 1825 and 1828, but by the birth of their first son, John K. in November of 1829, they had settled in Ontario, where John's profession in the 1851 census was listed as "tavern keeper" . Together, John and Katy had nine known children between 1825 and 1840. One daughter, Margaret, born in 1826 in France, died in infancy.
