Eli Sparks COMBS, son of William Asenath (ELLIS) COMBS, early pioneers from North Carolina, was born in Rush County, Indiana, October 30, 1836; died January 12, 1921, at 1 o'clock p.m. , at his home in Taylor Township were he had lived since about the year 1838, at the ripe old age of eighty-four years, two months and twelve days.

At his home in Taylor Township he grew to manhood and attended the district schools, getting such education as was possible for him to attain in that early day.

He volunteered to serve his country in the Civil War September of 1861, and served three years in COMPANY H, 31ST REGIMENT INDIANA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY. He participated in the battle of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Stone River, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and other battles of the rebellion.

After his three years of army life he returned to his home where he resided with his sister Martha COMBS until she preceded him in death. Since her passing he has made his home with his nephew, John L. COMBS and family—John moving into the old home—thus Uncle Eli retaining the home of his youth.

Early in life he formed a partnership in farming with his brother William H. COMBS. Their business relations extended through his years of activity and was not severed until his passing away.

His brother William is the only one remaining of five brothers and two sisters.

Uncle Eli was unmarried, and living near his brother who is the father of a large family had by his kind and affectionate nature endeared himself to them.

Being affiliated with the Republican Party he was elected township trustee of his home township in the year 1894 in which capacity he served for about six years, rendering at all times honest and upright service which was characteristic of him.

He was honest and true to all his fellow men, believing sincerely in the golden rule, "whatsoever ye would that others should do unto you, doe ye even so unto them."

He leaves a host of nieces and nephews and friends to mourn their loss.

So live that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moved to the mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in silent halls of death, though go not, like the quarry slave at night scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."

The funeral was held at the Walnut Grove church last Friday morning. Interment at {Walnut Grove Cemetery.}

We desire to express our sincere thanks to all who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and after the death of our brother and uncle, Eli S. COMBS.
