Son of Joseph Cozadd and Elizabeth Hargis. William was the only son of Joseph to use the surname spelling of Cazadd. (See article at end of bio.). He is named in his father's Fulton County, IL probate file and as a son in his father's 1812 pension file.

Believe W. M. on tombstone is just the abbreviation for William. No documents (100+ pages) in his Civil War pension file indicate a middle name and he only signed his name as William Cazadd.

William Cazadd married Martha Jane Mayberry on 07 November 1844 in Wayne County, IL. (Information documented in William's Civil War military and pension file.)
Children: George, Martha, John Joseph Hardin, Eva, Charles Douglas ( born 17 May 1859 and died March 1860, Wayne County, Illinois), and 2 daughters (names unknown) died in infancy.

Wm. Cazadd is listed in the 1881 Mount Erie Business Directory. It states he was an undertaker and cabinet maker and that "You will find him a good and efficient workman".

William Cazadd was born in Hopkins County [sic], Kentucky, June 6, 1816 and died January 12, 1889, aged 72 years, 7 months and 6 days. He was married to Miss Martha J. Maybry [sic], November 7, 1844. Eight children were born to them, four of who proceeded him to the better world. He professed religion in early manhood and united with the U. B. Church. Moving from Oral Township to Mount Erie in 1875 he united with the M. E. Church at this place. His Christian life like many others was full of trials without and conflicts within. But a few days previous to his illness he remarked to his companion. I never thought I would ever reach that point where I could ever say I was willing to die, but I am now willing to go. While leaving many friends here I will meet many gone before. December 17 last, he was called upon to witness the death of his oldest daughter, Mrs. Martha [sic-should be Margaret] Purcell. All his suffering were intense but he bore them with such patience and gave significant evidence that he was prepared for the change. He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters to mourn his departure. His death makes a lonely home. Sickness and finally death removed him from the church militia and permitted him to help swell the church triumphant. May his children succeed in leading their children to the Saviour for they will one day meet grandpa (who they so sadly miss) for he is waiting and watching for those left behind.

COZART/COZADD Surname.
In November 1889 the U.S. Pension Office was still asking for documentation to clarify the Cozadd surname and a letter was sent to his son, William. Unfortunately, William passed away in Jan 1889. Eva Parker, William' daughter, responded saying (need to review what it said will add info later day 4/6/22) , but there is one valuable document written by the postmaster of Mount Erie, which clarifies the surname variation of CAZADD which Joseph's son, William used.

On inquiring I find that William H Cazadd, who died here last Jan claimed that his Fathers family and there Antendents (sp??-probably ancestors) were known as Cozort but when he (the one mentioned) was a School boy his teacher informed him that Cozart would do for French (of which he was) but would not do for English and thus and ___ spelled his name Cazadd, and this is the name he has been known by here and no other.
