Mr. Paul Cuprowski of Jersey City, NJ the former 32nd Legislative Assemblyman, Jersey City Councilman At Large and Jersey City Council President, died at noon Saturday, May 25th, in Adairsville, Georgia, after a long illness. He was surrounded by his children, Shelby (Sherry), Paul Michael and Lee and their families, as well as his former wife, Shelby. His current wife, Ellen, was still en route from New Jersey, her flight delayed by poor weather. Today we lost a father, husband, brother, uncle, grand-father and a LEGEND !!! Sadly after a 81/2 year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP; also known as Steele-Richardson-Olszewski syndrome) which is a rare disease that gradually destroys nerve cells in the parts of the brain that control eye movements, breathing, and muscle coordination. The loss of nerve cells causes palsy, or paralysis, that slowly gets worse as the disease progresses. The palsy affects ability to move the eyes, relax the muscles, and control balance.
Cuprowski was born October 25, 1940 and raised in Jersey City, NJ the son of Anna Mae French Cuprowski and Paul Cuprowski along with four sisters Pauline Coleman and Maryann Bruno residing in Florida, and Catherine O'Mara and Carol Hussey of Jersey City. He and his siblings lived mostly with their grandparents in the downtown area of Jersey City. He was elected to the Jersey City Council in 1973 as part of "a new generation in politics at that time." Just 30 years old when elected, he was then the youngest member of the Council. His career as a politician played an influential role in the revitalization of Jersey City. Growing up a poor boy in downtown Jersey City, NJ, he dropped out of school and joined the United States Army during the Vietnam Era serving his country for four years achieving his high school diploma and studied college level courses. He is fondly remembered for his coaching Little League Baseball, Recreational Basketball, having The Paul Cuprowski Association, Board of Trustees for the Boys and Girls Club of Jersey City and an avid veteran's advocate. Known as Mr. C. or Pop to so many children throughout Jersey City. His political career started as the President of the Thomas Maresca Association. He was a role model and mentor to so many. Always honest, caring and dedicated politician where he consistently put others first !! They sure don't have politicians of these criteria anymore!!
This smart, funny, loving and honest man will be missed by many both personally and professionally. He is survived by his wife Ellen Cuprowski in Brick N.J. And the following family from Adairsville, GA, his former wife Shelby Cuprowski Adams, his daughter, Shelby (Sherry) Cuprowski Perine Killen and husband Richard Killen, and sons Lee Cuprowski and wife Denise Muir Cuprowski, and Paul Michael Cuprowski and wife Michele Scillia Cuprowski. Grandsons, Kenneth Perine and wife Tabitha Martin Perine, John Paul Cuprowski and wife Whitney Mulkey Cuprowski, Michael Cuprowski, Paul Cuprowski Jr. and Alex Cuprowski. Great grandchildren, Kylie Perine, Traceston Perine and Walker Cuprowski. And many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
