AGED PIONEER PASSES AWAY
"Mrs. Melissa [Sharp] Cantonwine, aged 84 years, three months and 14 days, died at her home, 517 Bross street, Tuesday night, August 19, after a long illness. The deceased was a native of Billings, Missouri,[**] where she was born May 5, 1857. She came to Longmont when a girl and had since made her home in this city. Her late husband was at one time a constable and Longmont police officer. Four sons survive: Milton, Clyde and Frank, all of Longmont, and Harold of Denver. There are also eight surviving grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 from the Prohs Funeral home, Rev. J. Richard Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery."

[**]There is some question as to whether Melissa was born in Missouri or Arkansas. Almost all of the census records that list Melissa after her marriage to Robert show her born in Arkansas. The only pre-marriage census record that fits Melissa is the 1860 Arkansas, Carroll Co., Hickory township census in which Melissa A. Sharp, age 3, is the youngest child shown living with the large family (10 children) of Samuel & Rebecca Weese. One of the Weese offspring, John, is shown as one of two witnesses to the marriage of Melissa and Robert M. Cantonwine in 1879. John had settled in Boulder county per the 1870 census where he is listed with a wife Roselle and an infant daughter, Lizzie. This information leads one to think that Melissa may have been a foster child of Samuel and Rebecca Weese in her younger years.
