Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.
On August 24, 1929, in Walla Walla, WA, Robert married Margareta Lydia Huntington, daughter of William H. & Lydia L. (Hasbrook) Huntington. She was later married to John Selander.
East Oregonian [Pendleton, OR], June 19, 1954, Monday
Robert G. Cantonwine, about 45, native of Walla Walla and foreman for the Francis McGee Construction Co., was electrocuted about 4:30 p.m. Friday on the Dr. C. A. Miller ranch three miles west of Pendleton. Cantonwine was driving a truck on which a derrick had been rigged, when it contacted both wires of a 7200-volt power line. He apparently was not hurt until he jumped from the truck, the power coursing thru his body when his feet struck the ground, it was theorized.
Aid Summoned
Two other workmen were some distance away at the time and they rushed to his aid, and then called for help—but one of them had to go nearly a mile to find a telephone. The PP&L crew and the county ambulance rushed to the Miller ranch, and Cantonwine was given artificial respiration from 4:50 for about an hour and a half, after which a physician pronounced him dead. Cantonwine appeared to be dead when the artificial respiration was started, but the crews tried in every way possible to restore life. The derrick pole was mounted on the back of a flatbed truck and fastened to the body of the truck with cables.
Funeral Pending
Cantonwine's body was taken to Folson's and while funeral arrangements had not been made Saturday morning, it was believed burial would be at Walla Walla where his mother resides. Cantonwine had been in Pendleton several years and was residing at 507 S.W. 13th St. This was the second electrocution of a somewhat similar nature in this area the last few weeks.
