Sylva - George C. McMahan, 88, of Gay Road, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he had lived the past 28 months in Inman, S.C., with his son, Benny. Mr. McMahan retired from Western Carolina University as a custodian. He was a member of Greens Creek Baptist Church and an avid fox hunter and ginseng digger.
The son of the late Arch and Dosia Beasley McMahan, he was preceded in death by his wife, Zilla Buchanan McMahan; daughter, Georgie Marie Austin; siblings, Ellsie Buchanan, Clercia Buchanan, Mammie Hall, Gency Buchanan, Letha Buchanan, Annie Buchanan, Adam McMahan and Charlie McMahan.
Surviving are two daughters, Virgie Mae Guyer of Franklin and Janice Ann Lyerly of Sky Valley, Ga.; three sons, Roy Lyle "R.L." McMahan of Franklin, Ted Lawson McMahan of Clinton, Tenn., and Benny James McMahan of Inman; nine grandchildren, Kevin, Sandy, Greg, Kim, Scott, Pam, Chris, Benji and Tricia; eight great-grandchildren, Ashten, Chapin, Bailey, Austin, Justin, Madison, Hannah and Lexie; three step-grandchildren, Dickie, Ellen and Janet.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernie Sanders officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
