She was born on September 9, 1941 to Kenny Peitersen and Arlene Peitersen. Karen was a "Great Dane" and proud of her Danish heritage. She was devoted to her church, St. Stephen Lutheran and was a member for nearly 40 years. Her faith gave her much comfort during her long illness.
Karen moved to Des Moines upon graduation from Mankato Business School where she met the love of her life, Walt. Karen and Walt made their home in Urbandale on Madison Avenue and built wonderful memories with their neighbors and friends. They hosted their annual 4th of July parties in the driveway and throughout the year, their doors were always open for anyone to stop by to visit - and many, many friends and family did just that.
Karen spent many hours at ballgames and despite her illness very seldom missed a game; she was an inspiration to all that met her.
Karen and Walt spent many summer weeks at their cabin on Leech Lake in Minnesota. For over 20 years, they made dear friends on Trader's Bay that began with a friendship with the Medici family.
Karen will be greatly missed by her family, husband of 51 years, Walt; sons, Walt (Pam) of Victoria, MN and Scott (Jill) of Urbandale; mother-in-law, Maxine Chapman; two sisters, Donna (Phil) Lachelt of Mason, IA and Barb (Roger) Howland of Forest City, IA; brother, John (Sandi) Peitersen of Eldridge, IA; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Nicole, Carter, Katherine and Joshua; and many nieces and nephews.
