'MOTHER' OF CO. M BOYS DIES AT 85
DAUGHTER OF YANKEE PIONEERS, CALLED BY DEATH AT HOME

Mrs. Mary Marquis, 85, beloved "mother of Company M", died last evening at the home of her son, Frank Marquis, Park Ave. West, after an illness of 17 weeks.

It was almost a half century ago that a group of Mansfield boys played soldier in the Marquis' back yard. Their captain for that small "army" was the late Fred Marquis, and it was Mary Marquis, the daughter of Yankee pioneers, who taught them the rudiments of military tactics.

Years later, those same boys, grown to young manhood, formed the "Richland Rifles" and again they played at being soldiers in the Marquis' yard drilling assiduously with wooden guns under the inspiration of Mary Marquis.

When the Ohio National Guard was organized the well trained Richland Rifles went into it and Mrs. Marquis' "boys" became the boys of Company M, 8th Ohio Infantry. In 1898 her "boys" marched away to fight a real war, it was her son, Fred Marquis, who was their captain, just as he had been when they played with wooden guns. When they returned from Cuba after the war, Mrs. marquis was one of a committee of four Mansfield persons who went to Monatauk Point to welcome them home.

She never lost her interest in her "boys", and when she goes to her last resting place, her casket-bearers will be members of that first young "army" which she mothered.

****

She was born in Painesville, June 28, 1847 (marker is 1849), and came to Mansfield with her mother in 1865. Her parents were "down East Yankees" and came to Ohio by ox-cart soon after the War of 1812.

She married Joseph S. Marquis June 20, 1867. They had two sons, Frank, who survives, and Frederick, who died in 1916 while serving as mayor of Mansfield.
