WILLIAM CARYLL AHERN
William "Bill" Caryll Ahern, 79 of Plevna, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2000 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois after a legnthy illness.
A son of Tivy and Constance "Connie" (Smith) Ahern, he was born Aug. 21, 1920 at the home in Plevna. He was a 1937 graduate of Plevna High School. William was engaged in farming with his father and did electronics work before his enlistment into the U.S. Army. During WWII he fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a member of the radio corp.. He received two bronze stars, a good conduct medal and numerous other decorations of honor.
After his discharge, William continued his education with courses in radio and electronics in Bremerton, Washington. While there he met and was united in marriage with Susan Kathryn Baker on Nov. 14, 1948, who survives. The Aherns returned to Plevna in 1949 where he farmed and operated Bill's Radio Service in Plevna until retirement. William was postmaster of the Plevna post office for 32 years until his retirement in 1992. He was also a DeKalb seed salesman at the time of his death.
Mr. Ahern was a deacon and sunday school teacher at the Mt. Salem Baptist Church in Newark. He was an active member of the Plevna American Legion Post No. 574 where he had held various offices. He was a strong supporter and lifetime member of the NRA, and was an active supporter and leader for 4-H in electronics.
William is survived by his wife, Susan of 51 years of the home; four daughters, Susan Ellen Marsh and her husband, Dave of Macon, Caryla Kay Hildreth of Liberty, Joyce Constance Ward and her husband, Tim of Kansas City, and Peggy Jeanette Wixon and her husband, Wayne of Ottumwa, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Donald Marsh and wife, Jennifer, Sarah Hildreth, Constance Ward, Victoria Ward, Vincent Ward, Tivy Wixom and Kathryn Wixom; two great-grandsons, Quinton and Devin Marsh; a sister, Nancy Klocke of Edina; a brother, John L. Ahern of Shelbyville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ahern was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 3, 2000 at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel in Edina. Burial was in the Newark Cemetery. The Plevna American Legion Post No. 358 conducted the military graveside services.
