A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James Robert and Robena Bumgarner Metcalf and was also preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Metcalf and a foster child, Charles Shuler. He was a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Dayco as a painter after 20 years service. Paul was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church where he served on the Grounds Committee and also had served as a former Junior Deacon at Barberville Baptist Church. He was a master carpenter and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and loved talking with his family.
He was survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Wheeler Metcalf; two daughters, Paula Minzenmayer (Dean) of Canton and Marsha Arrington (Alan) of Waynesville; two sons, Stanley Metcalf (Daurice) of Canton, and Greg Metcalf (Yvonne) of Ellenboro; three sisters, Reba Warren of Canton, Jean Gorrell of Alabama, and Rhoda Cole of Leicester; eleven grandchildren, Phillip Ferguson (Andrea), Crystal Stanford (Steven), Amé Swanger (Neal), Emily, Laura, Caleb, Caty, Johnny, and Angel Metcalf, and Kirstie and Jon Arrington; four great-grandchildren, Colbie, Davis, and Dawson Ferguson, and Jaxon Swanger; foster children, Verlin Shuler, Louise Shuler Green, Bart, Jeff, and Roger Crawford, Vicky Bartlett, and Danny Robinson.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Calvary Road Baptist Church with Reverend J.D. Grant, Reverend Matt Ledbetter, Reverend Mark Caldwell and Dean Minzenmayer officiating. Burial was at Gwyn Cemetery with military honors. Nephews served as pallbearers. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, N.C. was in charge of arrangements.
