Belmont Benedictine Now in His Eighty-Eighth Year
Rev. Melchior Reichert, O. S. B., for many years chaplain at Mercy Hospital, and who now makes his home there, is approaching the sixty-fourth anniversary of his ordination, a record seldom equaled anywhere. Father Melchior was ordained July 1, 1875, at St. Vincent's Abbey in Pennsylvania, and was a member of the first Benedictine Community at Belmont, participating in the election of Abbot Vincent as its first Abbot. Father Melchior was born April 1, 1852, at Gommersdorf, Baden, Germany, and come to the United States with his parents when he was two years old. They settled at Erie, and he made his college studies at St. Vincent's College, Beatty, Pa., then entering the Benedictine Order there. One of his first assignments after his ordination was to Savannah; in 1891 he returned to North Carolina and he has labored there since, at Belmont, where he was for a number of years rector of the Cathedral, at Belmont Abbey College, at St. Michael's Church, Gastonia, and at Mercy Hospital. Now 87 years of age, Father Melchior can look back on a life of service to God at the altar that is given to few in a generation or even in a century.
