Clyde H. Beck, who resided in the Apollo area until recently, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, in Carlisle. Born Aug. 26, 1920, he was the first child and only son of Clive A. Beck, of Apollo, and Marie Kons Beck, of Boezinge, Belgium. Nicknamed for his hair color, "Red" was a graduate of Apollo High School and served in the Army Chemical Corps during World War II, returning with many stories of his experiences in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan. In 1946, Clyde and Sara Louise Speer, of Arnold, married. Throughout his life, Clyde's chief concern was his family. He constructed the family home in Washington Township and provided well for his wife and two children, working for US Steel for 37 years. Clyde enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking and collecting and mending clocks. He was always patient with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and visited them often. Clyde was an active member of Apollo Methodist Church and also belonged to the Odd Fellows and the Masons. He was preceded in death by his younger sisters, Yvonne Miller and Germaine Fetterman; and his wife, Sally. He is survived by daughter, Diane Beck DeRoche, of Richmond, Va.; and son, Lewis Todd Beck, of Carlisle; five grandchildren, Michael (Sheri) Beck, of Reno, Nev., Jennifer (Jeff) Beck Borton, of Miami, Fla. , Steven Lee (Holly) Beck, of Baton Rouge, La., Kirsten DeRoche, of Bethlehem, Pa., and Erika (John) DeRoche Hayes, of Medford, Mass.; and five great-grandchildren. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Chaplain Michael Beck and the Rev. Jeff Borton co-officiating. Burial with full military honors by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park in Lower Burrell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Clyde's memory may be made a charity of one's choice.
