Born Ida Jane Hertz in Thorndale, Caln Township to Isaac Hertz and Mary Elizabeth Keeler Hertz, "Jennie" was the youngest of 6 children, only 3 of whom reached adulthood (Walter Wyman Hertz and Harriet Elizabeth "Hattie" Hertz Bair were the other two). She lived in Thorndale all her life and was known for her flower cultivation. She married William D. Mercer and they had two children, Naomi Mercer Speakman and Myrtle M. Mercer Wertz Vanore. "Jennie" divorced from William D. Mercer sometime in the late 20s or early 30s. She worked as a practical nurse and continued to live with her daughter Naomi (also divorced) and grandson William Speakman in her house in Thorndale on Lincoln Hwy near the intersection with Marshallton Rd. Her eldest daughter Naomi died of cancer in 1953, but grandson William Arthur Speakman, his wife Doris Stern Speakman and their two children continued living in the house through 1955. It is unclear how long "Jennie" continued living in the family's house on Lincoln Hwy after the death of her daughter Naomi in 1953, but she appears to have moved to her youngest daughter, Myrtle's home in Philadelphia sometime between 1954 and 1957, and ultimately passed away of heart disease in The Pocopson Home nursing facility in May 1957 after a two month stay there. (brief biography compiled by Kim Adams, her great granddaughter)
