Mrs. Serilda Evaline Barnes, respected Ogden and Boone county (illegible) died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Herridge, in Beaver township, Saturday June 2nd. Mrs. Barnes has been a patient sufferer since 1920 of paralytic strokes. She was rendered helpless on July 19, 1933 and remained so until the time of her death.
Serilda Evaline Barnes, daughter of David and Elizabeth Sparks, and grand-daughter of William Sparks, a pioneer Baptist minister, who preached and organized churches in this section of Iowa, was born in Marcy township, Boone County, Iowa, May 31st, 1861. She departed this life at the home of her daughter Mrs. Chas. Herridge in Beaver township June 2, 1934 being 73 years and two days old.
She is one of a family of nine children and is survived by two brothers, John of Armour, South Dakota, Alf of Gentry Arkansas and one sister, Mrs. George Holtz of Crofton, Nebraska. She was the mother of seven children. Those living are Mrs. Chas. Herridge of Ogden, Mr. Harry Steinshower of Berkley, Iowa, Mr. Charles Barnes of Webster City, and Mrs. Floyd Thompson of Boone. Those who preceded her in death are Mary, Alpha and Edith.
The greater part of her active life was spent in Beaver township until the death of her husband, C.A. Barnes in 1915. On account of failing health she moved to Ogden, in 1921, where she remained until December 24, 1932, when she went to make her home with her two daughters, Mrs. Floyd Thompson and Mrs. Chas. Herridge. She was converted at the age of sixteen and joined the North Union Baptist church and later united with the South Beaver Baptist church to which she remained a faithful member until her passing. Besides her four children she is survived by twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren besides a host of relatives and friends.
