FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
Early Sunday night, March 19, Jessie (Jake) Rexrode, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emory Rexrode was instantly killed as the car in which he was riding plunged over a hundred foot embankment into the Greenbrier river near Cass, W. Va. The car was driven by Arnet Hiner, son of Mr. and Mrs John Hiner who was seriously injured. Other occupants of the car were Pete Rexrode and Carl Rexrode, brothers of the deceased, who also were injured, but not so seriously as Hiner. It is supposed that the driver was blinded by the headlights from another car and failed to see the edge of the highway. Funeral services for Rexrode were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock at Asbury church conducted by Rev. I. H. Light assisted by Rev. C. B. Gibbs and Rev. Fred White. Interment was made in the Asbury cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of relatives and friends. The four young men had been employees of the Gardner Extract plant north of Monterey.

THE RECENT WRECK AT CASS

A serious car wreck occurred near Cass, W. Va., on March 19, 1939 while Arnet Hiner, son of John Hiner was returning from Cass to Monterey. He had as passengers Carl and Jesse Rexrode, sons of Emory J. Rexrode of near Monterey. As they approached the second curve coming out from Cass another car went to pass them on the curve, and the lights blinded Arnet Hiner and he was unable to make the turn. The car left the road and went something like one hundred and sixty feet into the river, and as it did so, threw each occupant out of the top of the car. Jesse Rexrode was pinned in the water by two small trees that the car knocked down when it made the plunge. He was dead when help arrived. Arnet lay with his head between two rocks and a small tree laid on his head. Carl Rexrode was thrown, in about three feet of water and therefore was not hurt so bad. He swam over to where the car was and lifted the tree off of Arnet’s head and aided him part of the way to the road and went on to Cass for help. Elmer Rexrode, another brother of Carl and Jesse being in Cass at the time of the accident summoned another car to the scene. It being dark Elmer fell over the cliff where the wreck was and sustained a gash cut in his head. Arnet was later taken to the King’s Daughters’ hospital, where his condition, is reported favorable at this time. Funeral service was held for Jesse Rexrode at Asbury Chapel at two o’clock.
