He is survived by his wife Harvey, children Sandra Schoppe (Ed) of Ephraim, Utah and Curtis Schmutz of St. George; seven grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Stan was raised and lived in Dixie all of his life, the Dixie that he loved so much. He was a cattle rancher and musician, and the music teacher at Woodward Jr. High for 36 years, teaching band and chorus.
He was loved and respected by his students at the school. He was known as Mr. Schmutz and "Stan the man". He loved his students and enjoyed his teaching time very much.
Stanley served in the Army Air Corp in WWII. He was a bombardier on a B17, shot down on his 18th mission and captured by the Germans. He was a prisoner of war for nearly two years at Stalag 3.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served faithfully all of his life. He served in many callings in the church, a seven year stake mission, 70's quorum, and many others. He was a faithful patron of the St. George Temple.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. George East Stake Center. Viewing will be held on Friday, October 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Spilsbury Mortuary and again on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to service.
