John Henry Schmutz, the son of Johannes and Clorinda Schlappi Schmutz, was born October 26, 1878, in St. George, Utah. The second child and oldest son in the family of twelve children, John learned early to work and never to expect anything from the Lord, or man, for whih one did not work. He began his schooling in his teacher's home before there was a school building in St. George. He helped build, and was one of the first students at the Woodward School. He attended the Dixie Academy, later he was a student at the Agricultural College in Logan. He has been a cattleman and rancher all his life.

On June 25, 1905 he married Maggie Morris, and in 1913 he was called to Bern, Switzerland as a Church Missionary. He was called home from his mission when his wife became gravely ill. She passed away May 13, 1914. He finished his mission in the Northern States. On April 27, 1916 he married Ada Cornelia Snow. To them were born two sons, Stanley M.(Mahonri) and Ray S. (Snow) Schmutz, both of St. George, Utah. John has nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Ada passed away March 10, 1956.

On Feb. 9, 1957 John married Ruth Ford Bunker. She passed away April 19, 1971. He has been active in the church, serving a stake mission, a full time mission, as a member of a bishopric, a high councilman, and a High Priest group leader. He has also been an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple for more than 40 years, being probably the oldest living temple worker in the world.
