INO, WIS. - David M. Suminski, age 74, of Ino, Wis. passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. Dave was born June 18, 1931, in Ashland, the son of Mitchell and Rose (Bulanek) Suminski. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1949. He continued on to UW-Madison, where he played football for the Badgers and was all American and Big 10. On April 24, 1953, he was united in marriage to Dodie J. Selje in Dubuque, Iowa. He played in the 1953 Rose Bowl game. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins and then traded to the Chicago Cardinals, where he played until he had to put his time in the Korean War effort. He played football for Fort Belvoir for two years and made All Armed Forces. After his discharge, he played for more than five years for the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the Canadian League, participating in the Grey Cup championships. He was chosen on the Fabulous 50s Tiger Cat All Stars. He was inducted into the UW-Madison Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. Following his football career, he was employed by the Ferry Morse Seed Co. until his retirement. Upon returning north, he became very active in the Chequamegon Bay Area UW Alumni Club, acting as scholarship chairman for more than eight years. He loved his lake home that he and his family built. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and all aspects of the outdoors. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dodie of Ino; his mother, Rose Suminski of Ashland; sons, David E. (Debra Cooper) of Madison and Steven (Carrie) of Ashland; daughter, Dianne (Henry) Ciesinski of East Troy; and grandchildren, David M., Laura and Robert Suminski. He was preceded in death by his father, Mitchell; and his sister, Betty Chaich. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at the MOUNTAIN FUNERAL HOME, Ashland, with Father Frank Folino, O.F.M., officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. with military honors under the auspices of the United Chequamegon Area Veterans at 7:15 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at the MOUNTAIN FUNERAL HOME, Ashland. The visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home in Ashland on Monday. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home of Ashland and Mellen.
