CPL US ARMY - WORLD WAR II
WINTHROP - Michael J. Small, of Winthrop, died on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 86. Mr. Small, who was known as Mike to all, was born on Dec. 20, 1926, to Julia (Gribbon) Small and James Francis Small in Bucks County, Pa., the second youngest of 11 children.

While living in Pennsylvania, Mr. Small was a member of the Knights of Columbus and various professional organizations. He also was an avid Little League coach. During World War II, he served in the Army as a member of the military police in the Philippines, achieving the rank of corporal. Before and after WWII, Mr. Small worked for Hill Refrigeration of Trenton, N.J., a manufacturer of supermarket refrigeration equipment. From quality control manager, he became division manager for New England. He retired in 1993 after 49 years of service.

He and his wife Carol (Prairie) Small married on Feb. 14, 1987. The couple lived in Connecticut, Florida and finally Winthrop, which they have called home for 10 years. For the past 10 years, he has been a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Mike loved playing golf and tennis and was an avid Notre Dame College football fan. He will be remembered for his Irish sense of humor, a dry wit and a mischievous grin. He was also known for regaling friends with stories of growing up in a large Irish household with its succession of housekeepers who were kept busy following his mother's death when he was just 2 years old. His love of family and friends created a tight-knit but inclusive and ever-growing circle around his life. Mike was honest in business and in his personal life, which made him well-respected among colleagues, friends and family alike. And he was known to be a gentleman even during the most stressful of times. Mike loved animals, especially the many cats that he and Carol nurtured over the years. He was a kind and generous man and will be remembered for his devotion to his wife Carol.

Besides his wife, Carol, Mr. Small is survived by two of three children from his first marriage: son Patrick Small, his wife Lori, and their son, Michael, all of Connecticut; and daughter Mary Anne Wahle, her husband Tom, and their children, Joe, Claire and Elizabeth, all of Virginia. He also is survived by his youngest sister, Sr. Rita Small, of Philadelphia; and many devoted nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Mr. Small is predeceased by son Michael Jr.; and by nine brothers and sisters.

Interment will be at Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 11/27/2013)
