Charles Tyler Wolcott
Charles Tyler Wolcott, 81, died at his home, 16 Highland avenue Wednesday night. He had been in failing health for several years, but up to a few weeks ago had been able to be about the house. In the latter part of January he fell and broke a bone in his arm and dislocated his shoulder and from that time had failed quite rapidly.
Mr. Wolcott was a native of Readsboro, Vt., son of Charles Wolcott, where he was born Feb. 10, 1833. In 1850 his father moved to Monroe. He fitted for college in the academies at Whitingham, Vt., Paper Village, N. H., Shelburne Falls, and a select school in Rowe. He entered Norwich university in 1856 and was graduated in 1859. For a time he read law and then took up civil engineering.. He was first employed as rodman on the Fitchburg R. R. Later he was assistant engineer and engineer in charge of work on the Fitchburg, Westfield & North Adams, Boston & Albany, Lee & Hudson, Troy & Greenfield, Mass., Central Narrow Guage from Brattleboro to Wilmington, Vt., and other railroads. He assisted in taking the levels for Hoosac tunnel. from Monroe he went to Stockbridge and came from there to Greenfield. in 1874. He had been a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives and later was enrolling officer , and was enrolling officer , and was a director of the United States Mortgage Trust Co.
He married in 1859, Lentina J. Ballou of Monroe, who died Jan. 28, 1867, and in 1871 he married Phebe A. Prouty of Marlboro, Vt. Since coming to Greenfield Mr. Wolcott had been engaged in general engineering work. . He was a member of All Souls Church and a highly respected citizen. He was a well read man, well informed upon questions of the day and a lover of music. As long as he was able to come down town he attended the musicals, recitals and band concerts, taking much pride in the Greenfield Military band.
The funeral will be held at the house this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. S. R.. Maxwell of All Souls Church officiating. the burial will be in Green River cemetery. He leaves besides his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Slocomb, a well know organist, and two sons, Clayton, a dentist of Hanover, Pa., and Theodore B. Walcott, Machinist on the B & M. R. R. of Lowell.
