Abraham is the son of John Cowell and first wife Rebecca Hine (b. 9 Apr 1739 Milford, CT d. abt 1784 Woodburry, CT)...Abraham was born on Bullet Hill, Southbury Parish, in Woodbury, Litchfield, CT... Abraham and wife Betsey Curran had 9 children. The other 3 are: Deborah Cowell (b. 30 Jan 1805 1st H Horace Cowles b. 1802 CT d. 1833 Candor, NY and 2nd H whose last name is Andrews who died most likely before 1840 in Candor, NY); Anna Cowell b. 8 Feb 1812; and Mary Cowell b. 18 Jul 1820. The 1800 census data for John Cowell in Coxsackie, Greene County, NY suggests the possibility of Abraham living with his father John. Abraham was single at the date the census was taken in Coxsackie in 1800. He and Betsey Curran were most likely married at some point circa 1800 in Coxsackie. Abraham was clearly in Huggtown, Tioga, NY by 1807 (later known as North Spencer). His brother Truman kept a day book (type of ledger) from 1795 - 1845. In 1807, Truman made an entry for a transaction he made with Abraham in Huggtown ( North Spencer ). However, it is unclear what caused the entry in the day book. Excerpts from Truman's day book are on file in the Spencer Museum, Spencer, NY.. The 1810 census suggests Abraham, wife Betsey Curran, and children were living with Abraham's father John Cowell and second wife Deborah Curran in Huggtown (North Spencer). Abraham and family lived on a 45 acre farm in North Spencer (this area was originally called Huggtown). In 1825, the farm consisted of 12 cattle raised for human consumption, 3 horses, 30 sheep, and 12 hogs. Abraham was a Baptist preacher in the vicinity of North Spencer but his primary focus was farming. Evidence suggests he was affiliated with the early Baptist church of Rev Phineas Spaulding in North Spencer and in Danby. The area in North Spencer where Phineas had his church would become Danby, Tioga County in 1811 and Danby, Tompkins County in 1822. In fact, Abraham's brothers Truman, Joshua, Benjamin as well as their father John Cowell were members of Rev Spaulding's early Baptist church. Joshua Cowell would become Deacon of the Baptist Church in Cowell's Corners ( a hamlet and business district in southeastern Spencer). Many of the various Cowell families continued to live in North Spencer and are found in various census records as well as property records located in the Owego Clerk's Office, Owego, Tioga, NY.. Joshua would live in Cowell's Corners. Abraham was a member of Swartwood's Regiment of the New York Militia in the War of 1812 at the rank of corporal. In 1818, Abraham was a lieutenant in the 95th Regiment of Infantry of the Tioga County Militia commanded by Lt Col George Fisher. Also in 1818, Abraham held a position in North Spencer known as the Overseer of Highway...In 1819, he was promoted to captain and the same unit was commanded by Capt Jacob Swartwood (Vol 3, pgs 1864 & 2048, Military Minutes of the Council of Appointments of the State of New York 1783 - 1821). Abraham must have passed away in the early 1830's. He does not show up in the New York State 1835 or 1845 census nor in the 1840 Federal census. Abraham is buried next to his wife Betsey Curran Cowell and brother Benjamin Cowell in the Old Spencer Cemetery in Spencer, NY. Abraham's daughter Diana is buried in the first grave site to the east of Abraham's. His 5 other siblings are: Elizabeth Anne (Anna) Cowell b. 1 Aug 1762 Milford, CT d. 10 Aug 1806 Greenfield, Greene County, NY (H) Adonijah Roots b. 14 Jul 1761 Woodbury, CT d. 13 Aug 1806 Greenfield, Greene County, NY; Samuel Cowell b. 18 Jul 1765 Milford, CT d. 5 Feb 1841 Albany, NY (W) Anne Leavenworth b. 15 Nov 1767 Roxbury, CT m. 16 Feb 1789 Roxbury, CT; William Cowell b. 1767 Milford, CT; Joseph Cowell b. 9 Jan 1771 Woodbury, CT d. 12 Feb 1836 Albany, NY (W) Cynthia Johnson b. 30 Dec 1778 Dutchess Co., NY d. 8 May 1859 Albany, NY m. 22 Feb 1800 Ballston, NY; and Sarah (Sally) Cowell b. 3 Apr 1783 Woodbury, CT (H) Johnathan Haight m. 20 Mar 1800 Coxsackie, NY. NOTE: Abraham Cowell's first name also shows up spelled Abram.
