Louis Bartlett Costello, president of the Lewiston Daily Sun company and for more than a half century an outstanding Maine publisher and banker, died at 5:15 p.m. yesterday at the Central Maine General Hospital. He was 82 years of age and had been in ill health for the past six years.

Mr. Costello was born at Wells on Sept. 14, 1876, the son of Nicholas H. and Annie Hill Costello. He was graduated from Berwick Academy and Bates College.

Following his graduation from Bates College in 1898, he became general manager of the Lewiston Daily Sun, then in its infancy. It was under his leadership and guidance that the morning newspaper was developed into one of the major dailies of the State. In 1926, he became treasurer and general manager of the Lewiston Daily Sun corporation, publishing both The Lewiston Daily Sun and the Lewiston Evening Journal. He became president of the corporation in 1945, and continued to hold that position through his last illness.

On Feb. 14, 1900, Mr. Costello was married, in Lewiston, to Sadie M. Brackett, a Bates classmate. She passed away in 1957.

Mr. and Mrs. Costello traveled extensively in Europe, the Mediterranean area and Egypt during the 1920s and 1930s. In the late 1940s, they toured the continental United States. It was through those years that his reports, under the headline, "A Leaf Out of My Notebook," became familiar to readers of The Sun.

Throughout his life, Mr. Costello maintained an active interest in Bates College. He became a trustee of the college in 1916, serving on many of the most important college committees through the years, as the institution developed. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Board of Fellows of the college.

In 1951, Mr. Costello was honored by the college for his long and outstanding service and "singular devotion" to Bates. A year later, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.

As an undergraduate, Mr. Costello helped to establish debating on an intercollegiate footing at Bates. In 1915, he became one of the organizers of the Bates chapter of Delta Sigma Rho, the national honorary debating society, and served as president of the chapter in 1931. He also was active as a member of the College Club and the Bates Alumni Assn.

Mr. Costello was a member of the Lewiston United Baptist Church. He served on the Building Committee which constructed the large stone church which stands at the corner of Bates and Main Streets, Lewiston, and through the years was a leading layman in the congregation.

He was a past member of Rabboni Lodge, F and AM, and a Knight Templar.

Mr. Costello was a past president of the Maine Daily Newspaper Publishers Association, and a member of the Associated Press. He was a trustee of the Androscoggin County Savings Bank of Lewiston from 1916 to 1956, and served as president of that institution from 1931 to 1939.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bates College chapel. The hours of visitation at the Roderick Funeral Home, corner of Wood and Vale streets, will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be made in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Please omit flowers.
