Mrs. Annie H. Wells died yesterday afternoon after a long illness, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. E. Hanscom.

Mrs. Wells was born at Wells, Maine, Nov. 19, 1842 and so was in her 85th year. With little exception during her long life she enjoyed good health and always took a keen interest in all that was happening.

She was the daughter of Capt. Charles H., and Mary Dean Hill, and lived at Wells until about 10 years ago when she moved to Greene to live with her daughter.

Born in the coast town of Wells in southern Maine at a time when sailing ships carried the greater part of all the commerce of the country, both domestic and foreign, Mrs. Wells' ancestors were sea faring folks.

In 1874 she married Capt. N. H. Costello, who then was in charge of a ship in foreign trade. For a time she accompanied him on long voyages. Her home was built at Wells in 1876 and there she continued to live for more than 40 years.

Two children were born to her, Louis B. Costello and Sadie, now the wife of Dr. O. E. Hanscom of Greene. In 1885 Capt. Costello died. In 1889 Mrs. Costello married William S. Wells, a leading citizen of the town. His death occurred in 1916 and soon after this Mrs. Wells came to make her home with her daughter, though she continued to keep her house at Wells and spent the summers there.

In 1922 she sold her property in that town but even as late as last year visited old friends in the town.

She is survived by two children, Louis B. Costello of Lewiston and Mrs. Sadie Hanscom of Greene; by four grandchildren, Mrs. Louise Costello Wickman of Wilmington, Calif., Russell H. Costello, a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Robert and Basil Hanscom of Greene; also by a stepson, Alfred M. Wells of Kennebunkport and a foster sister, Mrs. Willard C. Cook of Glendale, Calif. The burial will be made in the family lot in the Wells cemetery.

Prayers at the Hanscom home in Greene at 9 a.m. Tuesday will be private. Service at the cemetery at Wells at 2 p.m. the same day.
