W.R. "Dick" Bortz, 85, Wernersville, formerly of Altoona, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services-Sinking Spring.
He was born in West Reading, son of the late Walter A. and Alva A. (Berstler) Bortz.
Surviving are his wife, Janet M. (Nelson); two sons: Richard A. of Mechanicsburg and Jeffrey N. of Allentown; a daughter, Lori Ann Sullivan of Fairless Hills; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Fern I. Yoder; and a brother, George.
Dick was a graduate of Mount Penn High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He worked for 37 years with Bell Telephone and AT&T. He was a member of West Lawn United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Lower Alsace Fire Company, Lower Heidelberg Township Volunteer Fire Department and Berks County Firemen's Association. He was past president of the Altoona, Susquehanna Township and Reading Pagoda Lions Clubs with 33 years of perfect attendance.
Dick was a Master Mason of Juniata Lodge 282, Hollidaysburg, and a 32nd-degree Mason of the Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Jaffa Shrine of Altoona, Rajah Shrine of Reading, and Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine and past president of the Rajah String Band. He was a board member and drive coordinator of Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia and past president of High Twelve. He was also a board member of the Miss Pennsylvania pageant and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at West Lawn United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Tuckerton.
