He was born Oct. 21, 1930 in Peoria, the son of Adam and Giovanna "Jenny" Bartolomucci Matarelli. He married Mary Clare Ghiglieri on July 5, 1965 in Toluca. She preceded him in death Aug. 16, 1999. He was also preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers and sisters, Elvira (Frank) Cicciarelli, Julius (Betty) Matarelli, Anita Matarelli, Gilda Matarelli, Guido (Guy) Matarelli, Sylvia (Orville) Frank and John Matarelli.
Surviving are his two children, Ann Marie (Robert) Matarelli Walker and Robert E. (Jodi) Matarelli Jr.; six grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, Nicholas and Clare Walker and Samantha and Megan Matarelli and two sisters-in-law, Edith (John) Matarelli and Rosetta (Guy) Matarelli.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He worked as a loan officer at Citizens National Bank in Toluca.
