Born Feb. 3, 1927, in Lewistown, Pa., to the late Merle Clarence Byers and Hazel (Verner) Byers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Clarence M Byers and one sister, Flossie Cutshall.
Joseph was an ordained minister of the Church of Nazarene. He pastored over four churches; Cumberland Bethel, Barton, Moscow, Frostburg and transferred to Virginia upon retirement he returned to Frostburg as Pastor Emeritus. Joseph was a US Army veteran of World War II serving as a tank commander in Germany and France. He was a member of Farrady Post 24 American Legion where he served as Chaplin of the honor guard.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, whom he married on Oct. 17, 1945, in Huntingdon, Pa., JunAnn (McConnell) Byers; daughter, Tonya Marie Butter and husband Walter, of Boston, Mass.; many cousins, nieces, nephews and his beloved friends and relatives at his hunting camp.
A funeral service will be conducted in the Frostburg Church of the Nazarene, 150 Center St., Frostburg, on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Tim Smith, Pastor Ken Fisher and Associate Pastor Edna Clark officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
