Jan Winston Long, 94, of Kendal at Longwood, Kennett Square, died on Oct. 30, 2013, of congestive heart failure.
He was born Aug. 15, 1919 in Boston, Mass. to Mary Roumfort Coover and Cedric B. Long.
Jan graduated from Haverford College in 1941with a degree in Biology, and from Cornell University, N.Y. in 1951 with a masters degree in science education.
Jan served in Civilian Public Service from 1942 to 1945 for Timber Stand Improvement in Oregon.
He also volunteered in a medical experimental unit at Yale University in Connecticut as a part of his service.
From 1946 to 1985 Jan taught at Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school in West Chester, Pa. He served as a teacher of math and earth sciences as well as a dorm parent and a track and cross country coach.
Jan met his future wife, Alice Bacon Long, a fellow teacher at Westtown School in 1946, and married her two years later in 1948. They were married for 65 years and were members of Westtown Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends.
Alice is a member of Westtown's class of 1942, a ten-year Lower School teacher, and longtime Historical Collection Curator and volunteer for the school. Jan coached the first cross country team at Westtown School in 1963-64. "The Long Run", held every Alumni Day, was named for Jan in 1985 to celebrate his legacy and lasting contributions to the lives and education of thousands of students and athletes, both in and outside of the classroom.
Jan and Alice worked on a wide variety of service activities, spending a 1956-1957 sabbatical year in Crown Point, New Mexico, where they worked with the Navaho in developing a new community center. They led a team of Westtown students to Rotenburg, Germany in the summer of 1952 to help build a youth hostel along with a group of German and Dutch students.
After his retirement in 1985, he and his wife Alice continued to volunteer for Westtown School in the greenhouse growing orchids. Jan's passions included traveling, conservation of nature, vegetable gardening, birding, growing orchids, collecting sap to make maple syrup, and playing bridge. Jan retired from teaching in 1985. His honesty and integrity could not be doubted; his love of the truth spoke clearly to students and colleagues in his daily ways as a scientist, teacher and Friend.
He shared an expectation of civility and a dry sense of humor with his students; they were always his top priority, and they knew it.
Alice and Jan did not have biological children, but they have many students, nieces and nephews they loved and supported as parents do.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Bacon Long, 11 nieces and nephews, 14 great nieces and nephews and 13 great, great nieces and nephews, as well as a first cousin, Frances Coover Funk, of Dillsburg, Pa. Jan was loved deeply and will be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30th, at Kendal at Longwood, 1109 East Baltimore Pike, Kennett Square, PA 19348 . In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Westtown School Science Institute. 975 Westtown Road, West Chester, PA 19382.
