Carolyn Barton English died on April 10, 2011, at Fellowship Village in Liberty Corner, N.J., at the age of 92. A memorial service will be held at two o'clock in the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church on Friday afternoon, May 27, 2011. Arrangements under the direction of Valley Memorial Funeral Home, Gillette, N.J.
Carolyn was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., spent her early years on oil leases in Oklahoma and Texas, and moved to Summit, N.J., where she attended Summit High School. She graduated from Smith College in 1939. A longtime resident of Summit, she gave tremendous support to community organizations, volunteering at Planned Parenthood, the Central Presbyterian Church and Overlook Hospital, and serving on the boards of Planned Parenthood and Kessler Rehabilitation Institute. More recently, she served on the board of Frost Valley YMCA.
Carolyn was a co-owner of the English Farm in Liberty Corner, N.J., where she spent much of her time with her family and friends. She loved working in the garden surrounded by children and frequently hosted field trips for elementary school children at the farm.
She is remembered for her tireless energy doing for others and readily gave comfort through her listening and caring. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Carolyn was married for 54 years to Woodruff J. English, who predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by their five children, Woodruff II (Annie Terry English) of Portland, Ore.; Virginia (Steve Holt) of Seattle, Wash.; Barton of Fredericksburg, Texas; Elizabeth of Breaux Bridge, La., and Cambridge, Ontario, Calif., and Carol (Patrick Black) of Liberty Corner, N.J.; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She also is survived by her sister, Eleanor Sebastian of Southampton, Pa., and brother, Daniel M. Barton (Pat) of Tulsa, Okla.
