Michael was the son of Herbert Backer and Elizabeth Backer of Scotia NY and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 30 1965 in Albany NY. In Vietnam he was serving with HMM-262, MAG-15, 9th MAB, FMFPac.

On August 31 during a medical evacuation mission, while enroute to the USS Tripoli, the lead CH-46A aircraft separated in three sections in the air and crashed in the vicinity of Hai Lang in Quang Tri Province. Two pilots, two crewmen and one medevac were all killed.
