Gretchen was born April 20, 1940, in Syracuse, New York, the daughter of Edward Convne and Harriet Grace (Steele) Miller.
She came with her parents to Rutland in 1944, attended Rutland public schools, graduating from Rutland High School in the Class of ‘58. She attended Mount Holyoke and graduated from UVM in 1962.
She married Roger Mason Pike in 1962, and accompanied him to Wichita, KS, while he served in the U.S. Air Force, as a lieutenant. They returned to Rutland in 1965.
Gretchen became involved in the Girl Scouts again, upon her return to Rutland, serving for several years as the district Girl Scout Cookie chair, in addition to her involvement with the Tamarack Notch day camp.
During her business career, Gretchen worked at Evelyn's Florist, served as Treasurer of Trinity Episcopal Church, bookkeeper at Grace Congregational Church, UCC, and lastly as Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Open Door Mission, for over 25 years.
Since her retirement, she has enjoyed her frequent trips to Arizona with Roger, to their home in the southeast corner of the state; being with her grandchildren; and the annual family outing at deer camp.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Roger; a son, Edward of Colchester, VT, his wife, Laurie and daughter, Emily; and daughter, Deborah Creed, her husband, Christopher, daughter Courtney and son, Matthew.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held Friday, November 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the Trinity Church Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Open Door Mission, 31 Park St., Rutland, VT 05701, or to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 85 West St., Rutland, VT 05701.
