Bruce was the husband of Betty W. Kern and the loving father of Bruce A. Kern Jr. of Winter Park FL. He was the son of Paul Kern of Orlando and Ruthe Kern also of Orlando FL. Bruce enlisted in the US Marine Corps on December 12 1966 in Jacksonville FL and was serving in Vietnam with Company G, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the beginning of September the Battalion was participating in Operation KINGFISHER from the vicinity of Con Thien in the Gio Linh District of Quang Tri Province. On September 12, a Company G reinforced squad in their ambush position east of route 561 in the vicinity of X Tat Bong observed a group of NVA approaching and took the enemy under fire. The fire fight with the enemy escalated and enemy 60 mm mortars began to hit the Marines position forcing the Marines to withdraw towards their CP. During the confrontation with the NVA, four Marines were killed in action and three would later die do their wounds. PFC Kern was one of the casualties; wounded and evacuated to the US Navy Hospital Ship the USS Sanctuary he died on the following day from the gun shot and fragmentation wounds that he had sustained.
