Ann Clemency (or Clemency Ann) Gains was born to Francis Marion Gaines and wife Elizabeth Lake in 1956 in Illinois. Most likely Mattoon, Coles Co, Illinois.
In 1860, the family consists of Clemency's parents, her brothers and sister: Joel Henry Gaines, b. 1854, Illinois, Lucinda Gaines, b. 1859 Illinois, and George Washington Gaines, b. 1860 Illinois.
In 1862, Clemency's father died in Oct, 1862 during the Civil War.
In 1865, Clemency's mother married Vincent Scott, Aug. 28, 1865, Coles County, Illinois.
Between 1865-1867, Clemency age 9, with her mother and step father left Illinois for Kansas. With them were Vincent's son Daniel Scott, age 17 and Elizabeth's children Joel Henry Gaines age 11, Lucinda Gaines age 7 and George Washington Gaines age 5.
In 1867, there was an addition to the family - a boy named Robert Jefferson Scott who was born in Neosho Co, Canville Township near Chanute, Kansas. The entire family was listed in the Spring 1870 Census for Kansas, Neosho Co, Town of Canville.
In 1870 (August) at age 64, Vincent Scott died from injuries of a farming accident (according to family memories). His wife Elizabeth was pregnant with twins and was left to tend to their family. Also in Kansas was Elizabeth's brother Robert H. Lake, Vincent Scott's brother William M. Scott, and Vincent's sister Rebecca Maria Scott-Ellis.
In 1871 (March) Elizabeth gave birth to twin boys whom she named Francis A. Scott and Charlie E. Scott. The boys died a few days later. The boys are buried beside their father Vincent in Leanna Cemetery. The are resting across the road from Leanna Christian Church.
In 1875, Clemency, her brothers and sisters, and her mother Elizabeth are listed as living in Kansas.
After 1875, Clemency and her family along with Robert H. Lake and his family returned to Illinois in covered wagons.
In 1880, all were listed as living in Ash Grove Township, Shelby County, Illinois. Also, based on family information, the mother (Elizabeth) died when Robert Jefferson Scott was 13 (year 1880/1881). It is believed that the mother is buried in this area or around Mattoon in Cole County, Illinois where she had also lived.
