Capt. Burgess was the son of Seth and Molly Burgess of Harwich. He was lost at sea on a voyage from the West Indies to Russia. His wife, Asenath, later married Obed Brooks Sr. of Harwich. A hotel in the eastern part of the village, known as the Sea View House, was kept by Rinaldo Eldridge.
