A long time Arizona resident Dorothy Belle Elledge, age 93, returned to her Heavenly Father November 10, 2013 in Louisville, KY.

Mrs. Elledge was born on February 2, 1920 in Grady, NM--the fourth of seven children and second daughter born to parents Abner Elijah (Elige) Lewis and May Jolly Hyatt.

The Lewis family moved to Young, Arizona in 1924 when Dorothy was a young child. It was here where she grew up in a loving family. Education was important to her, she attended grade school in Young and later high school in Globe where she excelled in her studies. With meager funds she set out for Northern Arizona Normal School at Flagstaff which later became Northern Arizona University. During her senior year she earned a prestigious scholarship award.

Also while attending college at Flagstaff, Dorothy met her future husband, Homer Elledge. They were married on January 17, 1942 in Fort Thomas, AZ where Dorothy had recently accepted her first teaching position.

After WWII ended, the couple moved to Duncan and later to Queen Creek where they reared their family of three sons and a daughter. She was an excellent teacher and taught fifth grade for many years at Tonto Elementary School in Scottsdale, retiring in 1983.

Upon Homer's death in 1987, Dorothy moved to Winnemucca, NV to be near her daughter's family.Dorothy made many new friends there but always held cherished memories of Arizona. In 2005, she and her daughter's family moved to Louisville, KY.

Over the last two years her health slowly declined. Mrs. Elledge was a devoted wife and mother, and a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many positions of responsibility, including Stake Relief Society Presidency and ward MIA Presidency. She was generous in her time and service to others and will be greatly missed by her loving family and many, many friends.

Among those that preceded her in death include her parents; husband; brothers, J.P. and LeRoy Lewis; and sisters, Ruby Cox, Pauline Hunt and Geraldine Vandercook.

Dorothy is survived by her younger brother, Gene (Dottie) Lewis of Cincinnati, OH; her four children: Byron (Anamae) Elledge of Mililani, HI; George (Diane) Elledge of Bakersfield, CA; daughter Patricia (Paul) Mortenson of Louisville, KY; and Robert (Reiko) Elledge of Clovis, CA; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and host of nephews, nieces and friends.

She leaves a great and noble legacy.

Viewing will be held in the LDS Chapel at 2700 East Guadalupe Road in Gilbert on Saturday, November 16, 2013 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with services at 9:30 with graveside services and burial to take place at 3:00 p.m. in the Franklin (AZ) Cem.
