Margaret Crubaugh was born in 1872 to David Crubaugh (1823) and Elizabeth Jane Dobson. She was the 2nd of 3 children born to this couple, but her father had birthed 12 children with a previous marriage. Martha had a relationship with Isaac Newton Burbick that resulted in the birth of Walter B. Crubaugh on 6 Apr 1893. They never married. She did marry Samuel Johnson Mentzor on 9 Jul 1898 in Columbiana County, OH. The 1900 census lists Margaret and Samuel being married in 1896 and the excerpt below lists them as being married in 1889, but the attached marriage document would support 1898.

It is unclear as to how many children William and Margaret had. In addition to the children listed in the excerpt below, it would appear that a child, Annie Morris, was born 18 Mar 1914, and died two days later. Her parents are listed as Samuel Mentzor and Margaret Crubaugh.

The family fell on hard times. Margaret was admitted to a mental hospital, one daughter was an epileptic, several other children were taken from the family and awarded to a children's home, and Samuel was a day laborer and couldn't support the family. Margaret died in 1920 at the mental hospital. The attached death certificate gives the cause of death as "paralysis of the insane" William Mentzor died in 1931 in Columbiana County, OH.

MARGARET CRUBAUGH MENTZOR

Margaret was born on August 1, 1872, at West Point, Ohio. She was the only daughter of David and Elizabeth Jane (Dobson) Crubaugh. Her grandparents were Isaac and Catherine (Altman) Crubaugh, and Joseph and Margaret (Bennington) Dobson. Her siblings were William and Walker Wesley.
On July 9, 1889, Margaret was married to Samuel Johnson Mentzor at Lisbon, Ohio. Samuel, born on June 14, 1873, was a son of John and Elizabeth (Phlor) Mentzor of Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Dora, the first child of Samuel and Margaret, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, sometime between the years of 1890 and 1892.
Margaret's second child, Walter P. Crubaugh was born on April 6, 1893, on the Crubaugh farm at West Point, Ohio. The Birth Record in Columbiana County lists Isaac Burbick as the father. Walter was raised by his grandparents, David and Elizabeth, until age 17, when his grandfather's death occurred.
William Donald Mentzor, the second child of Samuel and Margaret, was born in Wayne Township, Columbiana County, on April 6, 1896. According to a note on the Admission Records of two of his younger siblings (placed in a children's home, and discussed later in this profile), William only completed the sixth grade of school. He entered the D.S. Army on September 9, 1917, and was released from service on March 7, 1919. William was twice married. He was divorced from his first wife, Lois Morgan in 1925. He married his second wife, Iva Holleman, on January 22, 1946. There were no children from either marriage. William D. Mentzor died of a heart attack on August 10, 1961, at the age of 65 years.

The next child of Samuel and Margaret was Ida Mae. She was born on Sept. 15, 1899, at Lisbon, Ohio. Also born at Lisbon, Ohio, on January 1, 1905, was Ernest Freddy Mentzor, the second son of Samuel and Margaret.

The last child of Samuel and Margaret was Jenny Jessie. She was born on Oct. 4, 1909. There are conflicting records regarding her place of birth. One indicates it was in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and the other shows it to be Newcomerstown, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The latter is probably correct.
Records from the Fairmount Children's Home in Alliance, Ohio, show Ida Mae and Ernest were released from there in August of 1914. At that time, their mother, Margaret's place of residence was on Lincoln Way in Massillon, Ohio. She had been a patient in the Massillon State Mental Hospital. At the time of her release from the Fairmount Home, Ida Mae was 15 years old. She later married a man named Steele.

On June 27, 1919, there was an Order of Commitment issued by Thomas W. Walter, Judge of the Probate Court of Tuscarawas County, placing Ernest Mentzor and Jennie Mentzor in the Tuscarawas County Children's Home. (Order of Commitment, No. 8876.)
"In the above entitled case the said children were this day brought before the Judge, and all persons interested were present in Court. And, it appearing that the said, Ernest Mentzor and Jennie Mentzor are dependent children of the ages of 10 and 14 years, respectively. That their mother, Maggie Mentzor, is now an inmate of the Massillon State Hospital; That their father, Samuel Mentzor, is a poor man without means or property of his own and is compelled to work away from home at day labor, and is unable to properly care for said children, considering their ages, and that it is imperatively necessary that a suitable home be provided for their care and custody. Therefore, it is ordered that they be committed to said Children's Home, to be there received, cared for, educated, and kept in custody of the Trustees of said Home, until they shall arrive at the age of 18 years, unless sooner released, according to law, by the proper authorities of said institution, or by this Court."

The Court further ordered that Samuel Mentzor pay at the rate of $2.50 per week for each child, for the support and maintenance of said children.

Jennie died from an epilepsy seizure on November 2, 1970, in the O.H.E. at Gallipolis, Ohio. Her body was sent to OSC University at Columbus, Ohio. Claude Miller made the arrangements.

Margaret Crubaugh Mentzor died on March 6. 1920, in the Massillon State Hospital: Cause of Death was listed as General Paralysis of the Insane. She was buried in the Lisbon Cemetery. Lisbon, Ohio.
