Eli O. Crubaugh was born in 1856 to David Crubaugh and Margaret Mary Elizabeth Benner. He was the 8th of their 12 children. He never married.

The following excerpt concerning Eli is taken from the book - "Crubaugh, the American Story" by William Leon Crubaugh:

Eli was declared an imbecile by the court when he was 18 years old. He had a speech impediment and a terrible temper. He did, however, learn to help on the farm. He lived with his father and family until his father died in 1910. Soon after, his sister, Jerusha Hemphill, purchased a home, with his money, in Lisbon, Ohio. She took him in and looked after him until her death occurred in 1929. His brother, Wesley, then took him back to the farm, to care for him. He remained there, with the exception of occasional stays at the Massillon State Hospital, until his death in 1934. He was 77 years, 11 months, and 25 days of age when he died on March 7. He was buried in the West Beaver Cemetery.
