William Bullack

William Arthur Bullack, Underwood, died June 22 at Hood River Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.

Mr. Bullack was born in Goldendale on April 29, 1921, the only child of A. Bryan and Laura (Adam) Bullack. He attended grade school in Alberta, Canada, and California and graduated from high school in Chico, Calif., in 1938.

His parents moved to the upper Hood River Valley, near Mt. Hood, in 1937. He resided there and worked in the Hood River area for much of his life.

He served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He met and married Ella Kent after he returned from the war. Ellie passed away in 1970 after a lengthy illness.

In 1964 Mr. Bullack moved his family to the Coos Bay-North Bend, Ore., area, where he worked for Sause Brothers Towing and then for Hillstrom Shipbuilding as an engineer on a floating pile driver. In 1980, he moved back to Hood River briefly and then finished his career with Reidel International in Portland, as a welder. He retired and moved to Underwood, where he resided at death.

He married Betty Hallock in 1972, in Coquille, Ore. The couple celebrated their 25th anniversary on June 16, 1997.

During his retirement, he cultivated several areas of interest. He was a prolific writer and an excellent photographer. He had several of his articles and photographs published in national magazines. He was always ready to help a friend, neighbor or family member who had a problem with anything. However, his professed occupation during retirement was "Betty's helper and chauffeur."

Mr. Bullack is survived by his wife Betty; two sons William, Mt. Hood, and Jim, Coos Bay; daughter Helena Fish, Mt. Hood; three step daughters Linda Gilcrist, Cornelius, Ore., Julie Nelson, Beaverton, Ore., and Laura Tengwall, Underwood, and eleven grandchildren.

Memorial services were held June 28, 1997 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hood River with Rev. Robert Chrisman officiating. Private family committal will follow later.
Memorials may be given to St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hood River.
Arrangements were made by Anderson Funeral Home, Hood River.
