Troy Gene Gaines, age 90, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Red River County, passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, August 25, 2017 at Titus Regional Medical Center in Mount Pleasant. Troy was born on February 5, 1927 in Deport, Texas to the late Forrest Belton and Sallie McLemore Gaines. Troy was a member of the Greatest Generation who saw hardships we today cannot understand. He attended school but left early in life to begin working to help support the family during the Great Depression.

Troy married the love of his life and best friend, Nora June Steeley, on June 12, 1950. She was his constant supporter and partner in life for more than 60 years. Together they raised nine children and scores of grandchildren and great grandchildren and lived a lifetime of memories before she preceded him in death on April 16, 2010.

Troy was a longtime resident of Red River County after moving his family, chasing work, most of his life. He attended the Albion Full Gospel Church in Red River County. Troy was a hard working husband, father, and grandfather who was the constant provider for his family. He loved fishing and hunting, especially, coon hunting. Those who knew him best will remember the tremendous love he had for his family and dedication he had to providing the best life he could for those he called his own.

Troy is survived by five sons, Roger Gaines, and wife Teresa, of Deport, Delbert Gaines, and wife Annie, of Clarksville, Danny Gaines, and wife Zelpha, of Millerton, OK, Kenny Gaines, and wife Karen, of Garvin, OK, and Claydus Gaines, and wife Jackie, of Idabel, OK; one daughter, Nancy Swanson, and husband Mike, of Pickton; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and very special friends.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda Bates; two sons, Coy Gaines and Gary Gaines; and by a host of brothers and sisters.

Graveside services for Troy Gaines will be held at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, August 27, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery in Hagansport with Ronnie Franks officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons- Andrew Gaines, Caleb Gaines, Christopher Gaines, Joseph Gaines, Joshua Gaines, Jessie Ross, and Timothy Ross. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M., Saturday afternoon, at the funeral home.
