Former member of the Pitoëff family troupe, he played several roles now considered as classics: count de Montray in "Les enfants du paradis" ("Children of paradise") and the Prussian officer in "Boule de suif" ("Ball of fat"), both in 1945. His typical elocution and his tall skinny figure became his trademark. He committed suicide.
