Gene Pollock, 83, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 4:05 AM in his Warsaw, Indiana home.
Gene, was born July 17, 1930 in Pierceton, Indiana to Harry Lemar and Helen (Keplinger) Pollock. On October 23, 2012 in Warsaw, Indiana, he and Carolyn Hyde were married.
Gene Served in the United States Army from January 28, 1949 - October 20, 1952. With scars on his face and shrapnel still imbedded in his legs from being wounded 5 times on the Korean War battle front, 20 year old Sgt. S. Eugene Pollock was brought to and honored before the Indiana House of Representatives January 15, 1951. He was introduced by Rep. Frank O. Rarick of Warsaw as a member of the Fifth Regiment of the First Cavalry Division as having engaged in hand combat with Red troops 3 times. He was wounded in 2 separate encounters; the communist troops left him for dead at the second one in November 1950 because he 'played possum'. His injuries required 6 hospital stays; and following this honor by the state representatives he left for the hospital at Camp Atterbury, Indiana for further surgery on his wounded leg. For his bravery and courage, T-Sgt S. Eugene Pollock was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon for being a part of the First Cavalry troops who fought their way out of a Communist trap in North Korea, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Campaign Badge and the Japanese Occupation Badge.
Gene worked in the maintenance department for the Whitco Community School System for 22 years - retiring in 1993. He then was employed by Warsaw Auto Exchange.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Pollock, Warsaw; 4 sons; 3 daughters; 6 grandchildren and a half brother: Herb (and Harriett) Dahlquist, California.
Gene was preceded in death by 1 son, 1 daughter and 2 sisters.
