Jean graduated from Anacostia High School in Washington, where she was valedictorian of her senior class. Following graduation, she began working as a legal secretary. Two years later, she began a long career as a civilian secretary for the United States Department of the Navy, working first in the Main Navy Building and later at the Pentagon. She retired after 30 years with the Navy.
She married Edwin Gerard Dawson on April 9, 1946. In 1971, she and her husband moved to San Mateo, California. After her husband suffered a series of strokes and began living in a care facility, she moved to live with her son and daughter-in-law South Jordan, Utah, until her death on October 30, 2013.
She is survived by her son Stephen Edwin (Julia Robinson), and a brother, Richard Butler, who lives in Florida.
Jean also leaves four grandchildren. Stephen Robinson (Chip), of South Jordan, Utah; Douglas Adamson, South Jordan, Utah; Travis Russell, (Melissa) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Amy Elizabeth Dawson Barnes (Orrin) of Tehachapi, California.
She also is survived by ten great-grandchildren, Andrew (Travis), Abby (Chip), Hannah (Amy), Alan (Doug), Quinn (Chip), Natalie (Travis), Sarah (Amy), Madeline (Chip), Ryan (Amy), and Jane (Chip).
Visitation will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 9750 South 2200 West, South Jordan, on Saturday, November 9, at 11:00 am, with a Memorial Service at noon. Jean will be interred at the South Jordan City Memorial Park.
