STRATHROY AGE DISPATCH, Thurs., FEB 14, 1918, PG. 8:
Last Friday morning there passed away in the person of Catherine Zavitz, one of the links that bound the present generation with the early days of settlement in this country. She had attained to the age of almost eighty-five years. She was the widow of the late John Zavitz, who predeceased her forty-two years ago. Catherine Treharne was born of Welsh parentage. Her parents were Thomas and Mary Treharne, who came to this country from Wales about the year 1830. They hewed from the forest a home for themselves in Lobo Township, where deceased resided continuously for upwards of sixty years. Their family consisted of twelve children, of which Catherine was the youngest. She was born near Niagara. One brother David Treharne is still living on the old homestead on the 13th concession of Lobo. Mrs. Zavitz was a Christian mother in the best sense of that term. She was a woman of strong character and of quiet and kindly disposition and will be missed by a large circle of friends. There remain to mourn her loss, one daughter, Mrs. D. R. Owen, of Delaware, and two sons, Ephraim, of Wallaceburg, and Norman, of Strathroy. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home of her son, Norman Zavitz, Ellor St., to the Poplar Hill Baptist church, where a large congregation of friends and acquaintances had assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to her memory. Interment was made in the Poplar Hill Cemetery. The pallbearers were her five grandsons John and Percy Zavitz, of Wallaceburg; Roy Owens, of Poplar Hill; Fred Owens, of Delaware; Ira Owens, of London, and Hugh Munroe, of Wallaceburg.
