Darrell C. Maxwell, 88, of Tacoma died Monday, June 4, in Tacoma, Washington, of age-related causes and Alzheimer's disease. He was born June 18, 1923, in Newberg, Oregon, to E. Miles and Gladys Maxwell. He married Betty J. Vrooman in 1944 in Denver, Colo.

Darrell graduated from Oregon State University and from the University of California, Davis, where he received a master's degree in soils science. He worked for the Oregon State Extension Service in Madras, Hermiston and Pendleton, Oregon. He also managed the North Unit Irrigation District in Madras, Oregon.

He was a long-time Beaver Believer and loved their baseball team, especially their NCAA back-to-back national championships. He even tolerated his two Duck sons. He picked up golf late in life, but enjoyed using his handicap to defeat his kids at our annual family reunion in Crooked River, Oregon.

Survivors include his sons Darrell L. Maxwell of Portland, Richard M. Maxwell of Eugene and Kevin S. Maxwell of Tacoma; and daughter Karen I. Johnson of Tacoma. Also he had nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
