On December 19, 1863, Willard mustered in as a Private in Company I, 3rd Vermont Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, and died of his wounds on the 16th of May. (some sources list his death as May 18th).
The Caledonian, St. Johnsbury, Vermont, June 3, 1864: "Died: In cavalry hospital, Washington, May 16, Willard Whipple, a volunteer from Waterford, aged 43 years."
The memorial in West Waterford Cemetery is a cenotaph. Willard is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
