Herbert Bennett (SN 5037) from Pleasant Street in Ballarat was educated at the Urquhart Street State School.

 He was a keen sportsman and was a 25-year-old bank clerk at Linton when he enlisted on August 20th 1915.

 He left Australia on April 1st 1916 aboard the Suffolk and joined the 8th Battalion in France in June.

 He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, during the Third Battle of Ypres.

 He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium, and on the honour board of the Urquhart Street State School.

He was 27 years of age.
