Mary M. (Vittetoe) Burkhart was the 2nd wife of Morgan Tennessee Burkhart, a Civil War Veteran and farmer. Mary was a widow, having been married to Mr. David Dalton from 1853 until his death in 1869, prior to this marriage. She and "M.T." married May 19,1874 and had one child together, a daughter named Maggie born later that year (July 1st, 1874) who would marry and have a family of her own*. In 1900, Morgan and Mary lived next door to Alfred and Melvina (Burkhart) Davis and nearby the Vandergriffs & Claibornes, per the 1900 Census. Morgan T. passed in 1902 and he was buried with his 1st wife at the Milan Cemetery in Union County. Mary remained a widow until her death on Apr 5th, 1916. She was buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Corryton, Knox County, Tennessee under the Burkhart name. Her marker also notes that she was the "wife of Major M T" Burkhart, and states "Mother at Rest", which shows her daughter, Maggie, more than likely paid for her monument, if not possibly some stepchildren as well. It was always difficult for the 2nd spouse because of loyalties felt towards the 1st or concerns of retribution by other adult children. I am guessing that they lived in harmony more often than not, as Mary's stepdaughter, Melvina (Burkhart) Davis, and her husband, Alfred Davis, lived adjacent to her and her husband in 1900.

*Maggie Burkhart married Albert Napoleon Graves (1867-1956) on Aug 1st, 1899 in Knox County, Tennessee. They are buried at the Fairview Cemetery, Corryton, Knox Co., TN.
