MRS. SAMANTHA WILCOX DIES IN ROME HOSPITAL

Affectionately Known by Friends as "Aunt Samantha"

WAS NEARING CENTURY MARK

Born in Smyrna September 19,1825-Resided for Several Years at County Home-Proved Source of Great Pleasure to Associates

Rome,Jan.2-Mrs.Samantha Wilcox, one of the oldest residents of this section, passed away today in a local hospital following a general decline in health due to the infirmities of old age. Mrs. Wilcox would have been 100 years old next September.

Samantha Sophia Briggs was born in Smyrna,Chenango county,September 19,1825 and most of her long life was spent there. Her parents were Warren and Tryphosa Gardner Briggs and she was the 10th in a fmaily of 14 children. She was of Quaker stock, but her immediate ancestors were reared in New England. She married Charles Wilcox,a carpenter who died December 27,1867. After the death of her husband she continued to live in Smyrna until about the year 1909 when she removed to Whitesboro. She lived in Whitesboro several years and worked in the knitting mill of Robert Ablett.

It was in 1872 that Mrs.Willcox was converted in a powerful revival conducted in Smyrna by Rev.Samued Moore. She joined the Methodist Church and for some years taught a class of boys in the Sunday School. These boys are now scattered far and wide, but all remember her with affection. Mrs.Willcox is yet known by many in Smyrna as "Aunt Samantha" and everyone loves and honors her as an earnest Christian woman.

During her long residence in the Oneida County Home she became well known and well liked by all her associates. She was a very intelligent woman and since living at Rome she spent much of her time in reading. Mrs. Willcox had had her share of the trials and tribulations of life, but they did not lessen her faith in God and in religion, indeed. It was largely because of this faith that she retained through all her days her sweetness of disposition and her serenity of mind. She was kindly disposed to all about her and showed her appreciation of the efforts of those who at times befriended her. Even her long confinement in bed did not make her impatient or cause her to complain. The example of her Christian fortitude and sweet and serene disposition impressed deeply those about her and those who had the privilege of her acquaintance only long after she had passed four score in the number of her years.

She is survived by one son,Robert G.Willcox, who lives at 1211 Erie Street,Utica.

The body was taken to the funeral home of John J. Strong. The funeral will be held in the Methodist Church at Smyrna Saturday.

**Throughout the obituary her last name is spelled two ways-"Wilcox" and "Willcox". I'm assuming "Willcox" is correct as that is what her husbands name is spelled like on his headstone.**

Another article from family scrapbook:

PASSES 95TH ANNIVERSARY

On Sept. 19,1920,Mrs.Samantha Wilcox, known to most of the older residents, completed her 95th year. Mrs. E.P.Tobey amd Mrs.A.L.Tattle visited her the day previous at Rome and found her in good health for one of her age, able to walk about unattended for a short distance and much pleased to hear of her old friends from her home town. She is able to keep herself some what informed by the regular personal of the "Telegraph" but not able to make them up into scrapbooks,as she has enjoyed doing or to sew,as was her custom as late as a year ago. She also is not able to write letters which are satisfactory to herself.

She wished to be remembered to all who were interested in her. A photographer called at the home that day and asked to have her brought out and he made a picture of her sitting on the lawn.
