The Rev. Cecil E. Abney, 79, of 1118 South McKinley St., Harrisburg, died at 3:40 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997 at Carrier Mills Nursing Home.

Rev. Abney was born on March 1,1917, in Eldorado to Edgar and Mary Hannah (Carnett) Abney.

He retired from Furnas Electric Co. in Chicago. He was ordained as minister on June 19,1960 at First Baptist Church in Harrisburg.

He was a World War II Army veteran with service in the Philippines from 1940 to 1945.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law. Cecelia and Phillip Staffey of St. Charles and Patricia and Eric Tesinsky of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, William and wife Liz Abney of Osceola, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Kimberly and her husband, Tom Page, Broughton, Mike Staffey, Steve, Christina and Amanda Abney and Paul and Erica Tesinsky; and two great-grandchildren Nick and Amber Page.

On Oct. 18, 1941 at Cape Girardeau, Mo. he married the former Georgia Lea Womack and she preceded him in death on March 29, 1994. A daughter, Mary Victoria Abney and a sister, Allene Sutherland, also preceded him in death.

The Rev. Abney was a member of New Castle Baptist Church, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Charles Riley will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery at Harrisburg.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at J.M. Weirauch Funeral Home in Harrisburg and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
