Her first two years of college were at Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee. She received her BA degree from Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1951. After that she pursued her Master's degree in Social Work from Louisiana State University.
Evelyn met her future husband, Carl Horton, while she was at LSU. Carl and Evelyn were married in New Orleans on February 5, 1955. Their two sons, Bob and Bill, were born in New Orleans.
In 1962 Carl was transferred to Dallas, Texas. The family lived there until 1965, when Carl was transferred to Kansas City. They lived there until they moved to Florida in 2000.
Carl writes, "We were active churchgoing believers and we love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom Evelyn is with now as I write this. We were married for 58 wonderful years. We are proud of our sons and grandchildren, and daughter-in-law Julie. We praise God for His many blessings!"
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to Clearwater Community Church or to Suncoast Hospice Foundation.
